Senior School English / HSIE Teacher

Ms Christine Sams

On any given day, I can shift from Shakespeare to The Somme, from the Russian Revolution to Reading to Write. As an English and HSIE teacher at Scots All Saints College, that is the joy of being able to present a range of topics to a group of curious, clever and creative minds.

There is not a day at work where I head home not having been inspired by the ideas and enthusiasm of the young people in front of me.

My particular interest is in improving literacy and writing skills among the student population. My favourite positive saying in the classroom is “change the label”, particularly to encourage those students who perhaps lack confidence in their abilities or find reading and writing more challenging than others. It is important to reassure all students that writing is a skill which can be improved and strengthened over time with the use of specific techniques.

Back when I was in Year 10, taking part in the school work experience program in my hometown of Young, I wanted to be “either a journalist or a teacher”.

After more than two wonderful decades as a journalist, specialising in writing about music, film and television, I decided to make a career change to teaching by completing the Master of Teaching (Secondary) at The University of New England in Armidale.

While studying there, I was selected for an Australian government program to teach overseas after receiving a New Colombo Plan scholarship. I had my first teaching placement in Bhutan, a country nested in the Himalayan mountains. The students there, in Years 9 and 10, were incredibly happy to be receiving an education.

The Australian contingent of teachers walked three kilometres to school each day wearing a traditional silk “kira”, which was made by a seamstress when we arrived in the country. There were motivational sayings on every classroom wall at the school not to mention the garbage bins in the playground, which all declared: “Readers are Leaders”.

Now Bathurst has become home for myself and my family, it is a privilege to see a sense of enthusiasm and curiosity in my classes at Scots All Saints College. My goal is to make every student feel welcomed and valued. Teamwork is our greatest strength.
